Bislicher Insel in North Rhine-Westphalia

The Bislicher Insel nature reserve is located between the municipalities of Ginderich and Xanten in the district of Wesel and is part of one of the few remaining floodplain landscapes in Germany. The protected area of just under 11 km² lies in a loop of the Old Rhine and acquired its island character when the Rhine was straightened in the north by the Bislicher Canal around 1788. In addition to the river, which regularly floods, Bislicher Insel at high tide (see photo), the area is characterized by quarry lakes created by gravel extraction.
