Bottendorfer Hügel in Thuringia

The Bottendorfer Hügel nature reserve is located in the border region of Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt north of the municipality of Bottendorf and northwest of Roßleben in the Kyffhäuser district. The reserve comprises several elevations, which lie in the so-called Unstrut floodplain. The area is characterised by extensive dry and semi-dry grasslands as well as heavy metal grasslands unique to Thuringia (former copper shale mining area with small dumps). One-third of the protected area consists of arable land.

Steffie Siehr from the NABU group Sömmerda (www.nabu-soemmerda.de) has overseen the two sites Wipperdurchbruch and Bottendorfer Hügel since 2020.
