Dörscheider Heide in Rhineland-Palatinate
The Dörscheider Heide nature reserve is one of the most valuable biotopes on the Middle Rhine, not far from the famous Loreley. Over the centuries, man has shaped this landscape through viticulture, sheep grazing, meadow mowing, arable farming, and fruit cultivation. In the dry, warm climate and on lean rocky soils, a great variety of habitats with rare, heat-loving animal and plant species developed. Over 650 different species of butterflies have been found here, as well as many rare birds, reptiles, grasshoppers, and other insects. As a result of the abandonment of cultivation, impenetrable bushes spread from 1950 onwards and threatened the light- and warmth-requiring fauna and flora. Until 2013, the chequered blue butterfly still flew here. The species has currently disappeared, but there are plans to reintroduce the butterfly. Since 1990, extensive maintenance measures have been carried out to preserve and reclaim the landscape, among other things by a traditionally herded flock of wandering sheep, which is also supported by goats in the fight against scrub encroachment.

Wolfgang Düring is deputy chairman of “NABU Bingen und Umgebung e.V.”. Professionally, he currently works as a teacher (mathematics and physics) at the Integrated Comprehensive School in Bad Kreuznach. He was active for about 25 years as a management consultant and project manager at Siemens in the IT environment. For 20 years he has been intensively involved (protecting, photographing, observing, breeding) with the butterfly fauna in Bingen and the surrounding area, as well as in Rheinhessen, the Soonwald and the Hunsrück. For “BUND Rheinland-Pfalz” he runs the butterfly homepage (www.bund-rlp.de/themen/tiere-pflanzen/schmetterlinge/) with his pictures of about 100 butterfly species. For the last 10 years he has been involved in the protection of the chequered blue butterfly in the Rhine Valley (Bacharach, Oberwesel). In addition to the purple-edged copper butterfly, the geranium argus butterfly and others, his focus butterfly species include the poplar admiral and the emperors. The protection of nature reserves is another focus.

Martin Unfricht is a graduate geographer specialising in geobotany and soil science and has been working together with his colleague Dr. Dörr since 1994 as a reserve ranger for the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in the area of the Middle Rhine slopes between Kaub and Lahnstein (Rhine-Lahn district). The two DINA sites Koppelstein and Dörscheider Heide are located in this area. He also works in the field of orchard management, dynamic agroforestry, and holistic pasture management according to Allan Savory at “Naturefund.e.V.” in Wiesbaden.
My relation to the nature reserve Dörscheider Heide:
I have been looking after and knowing the area for almost 30 years, managing the biotope maintenance (clearance measures, mowing, grazing, information boards).
Comment on the work at DINA: "During my work for the DINA project, I once got big blisters on my hands while taking soil samples, and another time I almost got stuck in the nature reserve with my car, which was not suitable for off-road use." (W. Düring)
